We previously caught up with Textured Hair Experts, Roegshana Versfeld and Alexandra Santos, in the first instalment of this two-part series where we delved into their careers in the hairdressing industry. Now, they join us for part two, sharing their top tips and advice when it comes to working with textured hair types.
Our Curly Pop service is all about enhancing your client’s natural texture with depth and dimension by adding rich, multidimensional highlights while still preserving their curl pattern.
Textured Hair experts, Roegshana Versfeld and Alexandra Santos created their own variations of Curly Pop on different types of textured hair: the Curly Pop Wavy Variation and the Short Curly Variation.

“There are far too many, but a common misconception is that lightening curly hair destroys the curl pattern. If using the correct lightening products such as IGORA VARIO BLOND, IGORA VIBRANCE and BLONDME as well as specialist care and styling products, you can have beautiful, conditioned curls with elasticity intact.
Another misconception or myth is that curly hair should not be cut too frequently. Because curly hair naturally lacks moisture it is essential to cut every 6 weeks and use products like FIBRE CLINIX Bondfinity Fibre Sealer – a great maintenance product which can aid healthier hair growth.”
Alexandra
“The myth that you have to wash your hair with non-foaming shampoos to retain the hair's texture! The client and I will define and aim for a hair schedule that enhances their curls.”
Roegshana
“A huge part of my consultation is reviving the curl pattern so we can truly see the type of curl. Asking how frequently the client wears their hair curly can determine my colour placement and the direction in which I would cut the hair. Exploring the history of the hair and if there are any fears, concerns or anything the client doesn’t want.
It's also important to establish the texture from roots to ends as well as the elasticity of the hair, find out how frequently they cleanse their hair, how they dry it and at what point of the day the roots are completely dry (this indicates to me whether the scalp is in good condition, flaky or smelly). Also understanding the client’s lifestyle and whether they have time to maintain healthy, gorgeous curls themselves or if they need to visit the salon more frequently.”
Alexandra
“First, you need to understand what they do with their hair on a daily basis – from the moment they wake up until they go to bed. It is important to understand this routine in order to provide a more accurate diagnosis to your clients. In other words, how to cut and style their hair and even what types of colour might suit their style.”
Roegshana
“A good care regime for curly hair is so incredibly important. In-salon treatments every 6 weeks should be sufficient. A healthy scalp needs to be maintained by ensuring that the scalp and hair dries fully and does not stay wet for most of the day. When the scalp is healthy, the hair is healthy.
A silk or satin pillowcase is essential to prevent friction from occurring, which weakens, tangles and ages the hair. FIBRE CLINIX De-Frizz Smoothing Spray is phenomenal for detangling the hair once wet and in its most fragile state.
Curly hair always needs hydration pumped into the hair strands. For this, the FIBRE CLINIX Hydrate range is my go-to. Formulated with electrolytes – need I say more?
For styling, OSiS Tipsy Twirl gives me unbelievable refinement and when going for a natural look and feel, I love the OSiS Bounty Balm. Tighter curls require more effort to apply product and to style.”
Alexandra
“When using any type of chemical treatment, it is important to make it clear what treatments the client will need to use on a daily basis. Always remind your clients to focus on using haircare ranges without aggressive surfactants or insoluble silicones that damage the hair and recommend a haircare routine for daily maintenance.”
Roegshana
“My go-to products are from the FIBRE CLINIX Hydrate range and the FIBRE CLINIX De-Frizz range. Both are formulated to continuously work on strengthening the bonds in the hair. Creating a lustrous, moisturised and conditioned feel while minimising frizz.
The FIBRE CLINIX Bonding Oils are also great to use after scrunching and diffusing, adding more shine to the hair and helping soften the hair as well as 230°C heat protection.
For styling, OSiS Air Whip builds volume in the hair with no stiffness, while also providing heat protection. OSIS Bounty Balm leaves you with a natural feel, enhancing the curl while taming fly aways and reducing frizz, and OSIS Tipsy Twirl fully defines the hair, enhances the curl and reduces breakage.”

“To be mindful of the natural growth pattern as that will indicate the colour placement. Density will determine whether you need to add more or less colour to the hair and if you should take thicker or finer sections. The most important take away is to not be fearful, don’t over process as this will breakdown the hairs' natural elasticity and always take in consideration what your client doesn’t want their hair to look like.”
Alexandra
“Curly Pop is about highlighting your identity with confidence – whether that’s with intense or subtle colours. Enhancing curls, waves and frizz with more volume, highlights, colour and finish, gives a powerful vibe without rules, where boldness and self-expression are the protagonists. The authentic celebration of the colour of attitude!”
