WINTER CAN BE HARSH ON YOUR CLIENTS’ HAIR, AND AS A STYLIST, IT’S IMPORTANT TO HELP THEM ADJUST THEIR ROUTINES TO KEEP THEIR HAIR HEALTHY AND VIBRANT DURING THE COLDER MONTHS.

The combination of cold air, harsh winds and indoor heating can leave hair feeling dry, brittle and lacklustre. As you would with skincare, recommended changes to their haircare routine will ensure their locks stay in top shape between salon visits.

Here are our expert tips to help your clients combat winter hair damage…

Focus on Scalp Health

While clients often focus on their hair, the scalp also needs special attention during winter. Cold weather and central heating can strip moisture from the scalp, causing dryness and flakiness.

Expert Tip: Encourage clients to massage their scalp once or twice a week to improve blood circulation, nourish the roots and remove any buildup. This will not only help with hair growth but also ensure a healthy foundation for beautiful, shiny hair.

Take a Break from Heated Styling Tools

We know it’s tempting to use blow-dryers, flat irons and curling wands during winter, but excessive heat styling can leave hair even drier. What’s more, heated tools strip moisture, making strands more susceptible to breakage. Simple changes to reduce how regular the hair is exposed to extreme heat can help prevent further damage.

Expert Tip: Suggest your clients air-dry their hair whenever possible between salon visits and try heatless styles like braids, buns, or curlers.

Reduce Shampooing Frequency and Temperature

Frequent washing during winter, especially with excessively hot water, can strip the essential oils that protect and hydrate hair. Encourage clients to extend the time between washes to help maintain moisture balance and reduce the water temperature on hair-washing days to a comfortable lukewarm.

Expert Tip: If clients wash daily, suggest reducing it to every other day. They can use dry shampoo or Bonacure Moisture Kick Leave-In Conditioner between washes to keep hair fresh without over-cleansing.

Recommend Regular Trims

Winter can leave hair more prone to split ends and breakage. Regular trims are essential to maintain hair health and prevent damage from traveling up the strands.

Expert Tip: Recommend trims every four to eight weeks to keep hair in optimal condition. Regular trims will help clients maintain healthier, shinier hair throughout the season.

Making a few simple recommendations, you can help your clients keep their hair looking its best during the winter. Just like skincare, their hair needs extra care and attention during colder months. By adapting their home care routines with a focus on moisture, scalp care, and avoiding over-exposure to heat, they will see the difference in texture, shine, and overall health, and enjoy healthier, hydrated hair all season long.
